In fiction, whether a play, novel or movie, the story arc typically follows a three-act structure. There is a beginning, middle and end.
In the first act, we are introduced to the character (a hero or heroine who we relate to), the character’s world and his or her quest (what they’re after).
In the second act, the character goes through endless conflict. Faced with one obstacle after another, our hero fights against the odds. Will the hero prevail?
In the third and final act, we reach the climax. We get our resolution. The hero wins or loses.
The three-act structure is not limited to fiction, however.
Our lives follow the same arc.
